SessionLab’s MCP (Model Context Protocol) server lets you connect your workspace directly to AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT. Once connected, you can design workshops, access session data, and automate workflows using natural language.

What is MCP?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that allows AI assistants to securely connect to external tools and data sources.

By connecting SessionLab via MCP, you allow AI tools to:

  • Search the facilitation library for activities that fit your session

  • Search the help centre for guidance

  • Create full sessions or add Days in existing sessions

  • Add or update blocks within an existing agenda

  • Search your workspace for sessions you've already built

Before you start

Make sure you have:

  • A SessionLab account and workspace

  • Access to Claude or ChatGPT with MCP connectors enabled

  • Permission to add connectors

Connect SessionLab to Claude

Claude currently provides one of the most seamless MCP experiences, especially via its connectors system. Here is how to do it:

  1. Open Claude (web app)

  2. Go to Settings → Connectors

  3. Click Add custom connector

  4. Enter the following details:

  5. Click Add

  6. Sign in to your SessionLab account when prompted

  7. Configure permissions (auto-approve, ask each time, etc.)

Once connected, SessionLab becomes available as a tool inside Claude. You can now ask Claude things like:

  • “Create a workshop agenda for a 2-hour retrospective”

  • “Update my SessionLab template with a new icebreaker”

  • “Create a new Day in my session”

Claude will automatically use SessionLab data through MCP when relevant.

Connect SessionLab to ChatGPT

ChatGPT also supports MCP-style connectors, though setup may require enabling developer features. Here is how to do it:

  1. Open ChatGPT

  2. Go to Settings

  3. Navigate to Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings

  4. Enable Developer Mode (if not already enabled)

  5. Click Create App / Connector

  6. Enter:

  7. Choose authentication method (typically OAuth)

  8. Complete the login flow with SessionLab

Once connected, the SessionLab MCP server will be available to your GPTs or conversations. After setup, you can prompt ChatGPT with:

  • “Look for an ice-breaker for a 15-person workshop and add it to my session”

  • “Edit my session to include 1 more Break at 1.30pm”

  • “Look up how to change the categories in my session and suggest the ones I should use”

ChatGPT will call SessionLab tools automatically when needed.

Important to know

  • MCP support is evolving across tools, and features may differ slightly

  • Claude tends to offer more mature MCP interactions today

  • ChatGPT may require Developer Mode or workspace permissions for connectors

  • Currently MPC cannot create or update Pages and Forms

  • Our MCP is currently in beta - and while it is, it's available on all plans.
